Endgame NotebookEndgames, a small repertoire, and post-mortems of my own games

About · Endgame

Endgame Notebook is where I write down what I actually learned from a game, which is usually a game I lost. It is kept in public because a notebook nobody can read back to me is a notebook I stop opening.

I joined a club in my district in the spring of 2021, mostly because the flat was quiet and I wanted one evening a week that was not quiet. League games are on Wednesdays, and a few times a year I play a weekend open somewhere reachable by train. This notebook began as a paper one, went online the same year, and has kept roughly the same three subjects since: endings I keep getting wrong, the small repertoire I can remember under a clock, and post-mortems of my own games.

What is here is narrow, and deliberately so. I do not publish opening theory, because there are people far better placed to do that and I would only be copying them slowly. There are no engine printouts, no rating talk, and no game of anybody else's that I have not played in myself. If a page is about an ending, it is an ending I have reached at the board and handled badly at least once. That filter keeps the notebook honest and keeps it short.

Pages are written by hand at the board or on the tram home, then typed up within a week while the irritation is still fresh. Opponents are never named, including the ones who beat me fairly; the mistakes on these pages are mine and the credit for the corrections goes to whoever sent them. Two readers I have never met have caught real errors in the pawn-ending page, and both are noted in the text rather than quietly fixed. I answer email slowly but I do answer it.
